Clip description

Deborah Mailman reads the voice-over narration from Connie’s autobiography When You Grow Up. The narration is cut with black-and-white photographs of Connie when she was younger, as well as more recent live interview footage of Aunty Connie. Connie tells us her father came to tell her that it was okay for her to go and live with him. Connie, angered by the things her father had not done for her, said she never wanted to see him – words she would come to regret.

Curator’s notes

Aunty Connie is an inspirational character. The physical challenge of being born with osteogenesis imperfecta is no obstacle to her newfound freedom. Connie negotiates love, family relationships and prospects of marriage. Connie is a striking character whose focus is on discoveries of self and living life to the fullest.

The story is very effectively brought to life by a very skillful combination of 'acted’ voice-over, interview material with Connie herself, stills, and well-chosen archival material.
