Clip description

This clip shows historic footage of the removal of the people from the Charles Creek mission station and Aboriginal people working in the pastoral industry. Agnes talks about the removal of the entire mission station to Santa Teresa; her experience working on a cattle station as a young girl; and gaining her uncle’s consent to marry a man of the right ‘skin’ group under the Eastern Arrernte kinship system.

Curator’s notes

From her childhood, Agnes remembers her people’s removal from their Eastern Arrernte homelands to Christian mission stations. The historic footage is produced by the missionaries but Agnes recollects the experience from an Arrernte perspective.

As an Eastern Arrernte woman, Agnes belongs to a kinship system with strict rules governing marriage. In the film she explains how her uncle sanctioned her marriage, as her partner was of 'the right skin’ group in the kinship system.
