Clip description
Opening on a Jamaican drummer, the camera sweeps to the sky and follows a giant bird carrying the product, a bottle of Coruba Jamaican Rum. We see a beautiful island and its playground attractions: gliding, skiing, palm-fringed beaches, musicians, bikini-clad singers, a witchdoctor, a blonde woman running naked into the sea, and a surfer enjoying a great wave. The Jamaican rhythm song tells us that Coruba Rum is for dancing, singing, laughing and swinging. At sunset, after all this fun, the ad closes with a bright big bottle of Coruba Rum.
Curator’s notes
This advertisement bubbles with the spirit of Jamaican rhythms. Director-designer-animator Phil Meatchem is an enthusiastic and accomplished surfer, and he brings his agility and ‘going with the flow’ temperament to this joyous ad. He covers a lot of ground in 60 seconds, taking us from a bird’s-eye view of the island to its heart, and a celebration of fun in the sun, surfing, music and being young and alive. Although the setting is Jamaican, with a clichéd tourist idea of Jamaica, the ad has a uniquely Australian sense of energy and humour.
