Ten cent postage

Original classification rating: G. This clip chosen to be G

Clip description

This is an Australia Post television commercial (TVC) informing the public of a new system for paying postage on domestic mail, dependent upon size and shape.

Curator’s notes

This 60-second advertisement was made at a time when postage of a standard letter within Australia was only ten cents. The purpose of the TVC was to alert the public to the fact that a stricter system of determining standard (or ten cent) mail items from non-standard items, was about to be introduced. The strategy was not about revenue raising, but rather about compelling the public to assist in the PMG’s aims of reducing costs. A standard letter could be mechanically sorted (in the new automated mail sorting systems being introduced), where a non-standard mail item was less easily handled.
