Tandaco Prepared Stuffing: Don’t Cry Dear Lady (c.1942)

Synopsis

This colour cinema advertisement for Tandaco Prepared Stuffing shows a woman cooking a roast chicken for her husband and her husband’s boss. After having trouble finding her herbs and imagining the consequences of serving roast chicken without stuffing, the woman uses Tandaco Prepared Stuffing. That evening her home cooked dinner is a great success.

Curator’s notes

Don’t Cry Dear Lady was produced during the Second World War when women were primarily home bound and domestic duties were expected of women, especially those that were married. Although only a snapshot, this advertisement is a classic example of the stereotypical image we have of the Australian housewife.

As it was produced during the Second World War, it is interesting to note that during this time fresh ingredients were difficult to obtain.
