Clip description

Alinta (Naykakan Munung) and her friend walk along the beach as two other children are playing nearby. They discover a white man lying semi-conscious in the sand. They think they’ve seen a ghost and run back to the camp to tell the adults. The men at the camp quickly gather their spears and run down to the beach to investigate. There they find the white man on the beach and follow the tracks of his friend, who is hiding in the bushes nearby. They grab the men and take them back to the camp.

Curator’s notes

This scene shows first contact from an Aboriginal perspective, with Aboriginal people discovering white men in their country in 1824 and subjecting them to Aboriginal law. This would have been a fresh perspective for Australian TV viewers at this time, more used to seeing white men discovering Aboriginal lands and subjecting Aboriginal peoples to British law.
