Clip description
When Joe (Christopher Schlusser) brings home the literature from his Communist friends his father (Tony Llewellyn Jones) gets really angry. Drunk again, he lashes out but Joe tells his dad that he is the breadwinner so he can bring home what he wants. After his father attacks him, Joe runs out of the house in the middle of the night. The street is no longer such a friendly place in the dark. He finds a place to sleep at the beach, crawling in with some tramps. Next morning one of the tramps (Norman Kaye) is very kind to him.
Curator’s notes
Joe is finding independence on the streets as a worker and has become interested in Communism, something that his father finds abhorrent. The violent fight between Joe and his father is very confronting and is followed by the loneliness of a young boy out in the scary underworld of the city after dark. The Salvo’s band and the kindness of the tramp provide an element of comfort.
