Clip description
In the Mincoh offices the telephones run hot as news of the war in Namibia and the company’s resultant share-price surge spreads. Liz (Tina Bursill) fields a call from a journalist while receptionist Jacqui (Mercia Deane-Johns) asks Dick Coleman (Ronald Falk) and Howard Nash (Peter Curtin) whether they think it’s immoral to profit from war.
Curator’s notes
Winner Take All’s take on the world of ‘80s big business has a tongue-in-cheek quality about it.This scene takes place in one of the key locations of the series, the Mincoh head office. In this scene it’s all systems go, with a sense of pace created by action that moves from room to room, brisk dialogue and the background clatter of typewriters and phones.
The roles given to the women in this scene are interesting with Liz having to speak to a journalist in lieu of Coleman who has more important things to do. Jacqui deftly sidesteps a comment from Nash about her 'sexy voice’ and is then completely dismissed by both Coleman and Nash when she questions the ethics of what they do within a world more familiar with deprivation than the spoils of Mincoh profits.
