'Optics is very difficult'

Original classification rating: G. This clip chosen to be G

Clip description

Using a blackboard, Professor Sumner Miller finishes outlining the theory behind the optical experiment of the day which involves two pieces of cardboard and a luminous source. He then asks the silent Mr Anderson for assistance. As an introduction to the demonstration, the professor explains that ‘we are going to have a very difficult time doing these experiments … Why? Because it’s optics and optics is very difficult’.

Curator’s notes

This clip demonstrates the flavour and refreshingly anarchic live nature of the program and series. The episode starts with a general explanation of the theory simply, but effectively, using the blackboard followed by a practical demonstration. Professor Sumner Miller, assisted by Mr Anderson, struggles with the props in the antithesis of slick modern science television.

Clearly unrehearsed, the clip is better able to show the charm and spontaneity of a host totally dedicated to sharing his great passion for science and his attitude to learning through engaging with your subject. Sumner Miller’s enthusiasm for the subject makes up for the drab and very simple production values.
