Clip description
Patricia is the student and Willow is her mentor. Together they are preparing a project about the history of the community in Patricia’s home suburb of Sydney. Through photos and documents they gradually build the story of inner-city Sydney as it was and as it is.
Willow is learning that Patricia lives in a crowded inner-city house that she often finds stifling. it’s a far cry from the banker’s own apartment on the leafy north shore with its harbour views.Curator’s notes
The haves and the have-nots of Sydney are thrown into stark relief in this confronting yet moving clash of two very different cultures. As Patricia learns to trust her mentor, she reveals more of her frustrations with life at home.
The directors capture a beautiful moment when Willow visits Patricia’s noisy, crowded, inner-city cottage, and sits with a fixed smile as Patricia’s mum talks artlessly about the problems caused by the banks shutting down local branches. The contrast then with Willow’s orderly, silent apartment, the Financial Review on the doorstep, is wonderful.
