Clip description

A storm comes as the cousins spend their first evening together in Badge’s (Alexander 'Mathew’ Jacobs) home. Sam (Cameron Atkins) is horrified to discover that his cousin’s family has no wireless. This modern 1950s boy cannot believe that people can live without the radio serials of which he is so fond. Jessie asks the guests to help with the dinner dishes.

The interior of Badge’s home gives an interesting insight into the pioneering way of life. The set shows a lot of attention to historical details. The lighting is also well done, contrasting the outside storm shots with the warm interior of the hut at night.

Sam’s horror when he discovers the family has no radio is also very revealing of the time. The radio serials were national favourites in this pre-television era. Unlike the self-sufficient Badge, whose needs are mostly fulfilled with his daily activities on the farm and in the bush, Sam needs outside stimulation to keep him amused.

Sam’s refusal to help with the dishes because it’s a ‘girls job’ is also of significance. At this time many boys did not help in the home for this reason, and the gender division of labour was a feature of Australian life.
