At The Movies – Series 2 Episode 20, Ten Canoes (2006)

Synopsis

The man of steel is back in Superman Returns, the first film to be reviewed this week on the television magazine program presented by Margaret Pomeranz and David Stratton, about the latest movie releases. There’s also a review of Tristram Shandy: A Cock and Bull Story. However, the really exciting moment is Margaret’s review of the new Australian film Ten Canoes, a story of forbidden love and bloody retribution, which is followed by an interview conducted by David with the director Rolf de Heer, and the narrator and co-creator David Gulpilil who is sitting with the star of the film, Gulpilil’s son, Jamie.

Curator’s notes

For more than twenty years, Margaret Pomeranz and David Stratton have appeared on our television sets each week to present reviews of movies and interviews with filmmakers. Their comfortable, argumentative style has become something we enjoy and respect, rather like a couple that’ve just seen a movie together, arguing its merits after the screening. There’s no right or wrong in these things, just a difference of opinion about the film. Indeed, we’re almost disappointed if they agree. The great thing about this duo is that they really know about films and filmmaking and whether they agree or disagree, they have a point of view that’s worth pondering, while their interviews with directors, writers and actors always add something extra to our understanding of the film under review and the craft of filmmaking in general.
