Clip description

Tess Silverman-McLeod (Bridie Carter) reveals that she has no home to go to and Claire McLeod (Lisa Chappell) finally invites her to stay at Drover’s Run. Having fired her men for stealing fuel, Claire sets out to muster the cattle by herself – but finds she has an unexpected team of accomplices.

Curator’s notes

The first scene in this clip contrasts country girl Claire and city girl Tess with gentle humour. When Tess explains why she can look after herself, she sounds more apologetic than assertive, qualifying her experience with animals and her ability to fix her car. Claire is very no-nonsense in her interactions with Tess, but her willingness to smile and also joke makes her likeable. On this evidence, Claire will be a tough nut to crack but Tess looks determined to win her respect.

Tess’s desire to prove she can ride a horse is also nicely played for laughs, as she pleads with the horse not to show her up. The rest of the women look comfortable and capable on their horses, which helps sell the show’s premise of women running a cattle station together.
