Four Corners – Far From Care (2006)

Synopsis

This episode of Four Corners looks at the quality of health care on offer for Australians living in remote and rural areas – the world class health care for people in major cities is not available for people in the bush where there’s much less chance of survival if you have a life threatening disease. Country hospitals are closing down as doctors can no longer cope with the strain of long hours of work with facilities that aren’t being updated.

Curator’s notes

Four Corners has a long tradition of exposing conditions in the bush that are unacceptable and this one is a savage indictment of the state of our rural health services. The program has found some great characters to represent bush people and through their harrowing stories, the case is put for more doctors and better facilities outside the metropolitan areas.
