Original classification rating: PG. This clip chosen to be PG

Clip description

Tarik Ramadam is one of the West’s most articulate Muslims. He lives in Geneva but was born in Egypt. In an interview for Compass he is outspoken and honest about the freedoms offered Muslims in the West in contrast with the lack of freedom for Muslims within a country like Saudi Arabia.

Curator’s notes

In this program, Geraldine Doogue conducts a series of revealing interviews with progressive Muslims. It is a timely opportunity to hear the voice of moderate Islam. Tarik Ramadam, interviewed in this clip, is visiting Fellow at St Antony’s College, Oxford University. He speaks about the negative effect of funding to third world countries from conservative Muslim regimes like Saudi Arabia. This interview is effectively intercut with location footage.

The ABC’s high profile presenter Geraldine Doogue who introduces Compass each week, gives the program a warm and personal face as well as continuity while the programs veer off in different styles and subject matter.
