Compass – Broken Open (2005)

Synopsis

Craig Hamilton was a very successful sports commentator who suffered a nervous breakdown at the peak of his career. He was about to take up a job at the Sydney 2000 Olympics when he fell apart in a very public and distressing way on a train to Sydney from the north coast of NSW.

Curator’s notes

Craig Hamilton is a charismatic and articulate man. His explanation of what was happening to him as he suffered a nervous breakdown in 2000 really helps us to understand what a mental illness is all about. This excellent Compass program is based on the book Broken Open which Craig Hamilton felt compelled to write soon after he’d recovered some equilibrium after his bipolar breakdown.

Compass defies easy definitions of its subject matter. Produced by the ABC’s Religion and Ethics Unit, its stories range wide across the breadth of moral issues we face throughout our lives.
