Arriving at Aileron

Clip description

Bob Randall drives his wife Amy, her cousin Florence and their children from Darwin to Aileron to enable the women to visit their mothers and family.

Curator’s notes

The film highlights the problems associated with removing children from their families and placing them within a foreign culture. As shown in this clip, Florence and Amy speak English, not their traditional language, and their mothers speak the traditional language and not much English. This clip conveys through body language and facial expressions more than words ever could: you see the mother’s love and feel their pain as they reunite with their daughter.

Bob Randall is a folksinger and in the car he sings a plaintive ballad, backed by Florence and Amy. While the music has been dubbed onto the soundtrack, the lyrics and the wistful tone in his voice speak to the song’s poignant theme of finding your place in life.
