Clip description

Molly punches a bundy card, 'clocking on’ at her work where she is a junior in a factory, sewing fabric on a sewing machine. After work, Molly is noticed in the street by an older man. She stops to chat with him before he leads her off down the street in an ambiguous end to the scene.

Curator’s notes

The end of this clip remains unsettling to watch. Does Molly know this man? What are his intentions? Is she about to walk into danger with him or is he escorting her home? These questions remain unanswered in the final moments of the film, but the following sequence – which shows well-off children playing tennis and cricket, on swings in a playground and running free in a beautiful park – seems to act as a counterpoint to the fate which Molly has just walked into.

Keeping in mind the last shot of the film is the same as the last shot in clip one, here the audience is asked the question: ‘what kind of future do children like John and Molly have?’
