Clip description

The workings of the sliding tunnel floor in hard rock tunneling are shown.

Curator’s notes

World records for hard rock tunneling were established on the Snowy Mountains Scheme. One of the technologies responsible for the rapid progress of tunneling work was the sliding tunnel floor – a large sectionalised steel platform, on which all tunneling equipment was held and which was moved forward in stages by a hydraulic jacking system. The clip, shot during the 1960s, clearly demonstrates its operation.
