Clip description
The safety essentials of training and compulsory workwear on the Snowy Mountains Scheme are emphasised.
Curator’s notes
After 1961, when the Snowy Mountains Joint Safety and Rehabilitation Council was set up, occupational health and safety became a priority for the Snowy Mountains Scheme. Safety induction and in-service training were scheduled into overall operations. Shot in the late 1960s, this clip shows workers receiving instruction from a trainer from the Department of Technical Education NSW, and lays out a range of safety measures implemented by the scheme. Safety procedures developed for machinery use, and the introduction of compulsory issue protective clothing and footwear, influenced national standards at the time.
