Clip description
A demonstration of how the hydrology testing and experimentation, carried out by the Snowy Mountains Scheme, was directly applied to the construction of the Geehi Dam.
Curator’s notes
The Snowy Mountains Scheme incorporated the Scientific Services Laboratory in Cooma. There were a number of laboratories within Scientific Services, including the Fluid Mechanics Laboratories. Because of Geehi Dam’s altitude and remoteness, its spillway was constructed without a gate. To avoid stability problems a glory hole spillway was built. The glory hole presented particular challenges, and a series of hydrological experiments, where water flows were modelled and tested, was necessary. This clip, shot in the late 1950s and early 1960s, illustrates the way in which results from the laboratory tests directly impacted on construction techniques.
