Clip description
The make-up and ecological function of the alpine country’s natural vegetation is detailed. By the 1950s continual clearing for grazing pasture had destroyed much of this natural environment.
Curator’s notes
Shot in 1955, this is a beautifully illustrative segment showing the type of pristine heath and herbfields vegetation of the alpine zone of the Snowy Mountains. This is the vegetation the first stockmen would have found 100 years earlier. The role of the alpine environment in guaranteeing the steady flow of clean, clear water down the mountains is well explained.
