'Buy Australian goods'

This clip chosen to be PG

Clip description

Packaged bundles of Australian woollen goods are ready for despatch to the capital cities nationwide. An intertitle introduces Miss Australia who appeals for the viewers’ support.

A woman stands against a brick building behind a large Australian shaped sign which has the Made in Australia Council’s slogan on it: ‘wherever you trade, buy Australian Made’. She steps out from behind the sign and stands beside it where she urges the viewer to ‘buy Australian goods’. The final title says ‘do not let her down’.

Curator’s notes

The intertitles refer to the woman in the closing moments of this film as ‘Miss Australia’. However, the inaugural Miss Australia contest wasn’t held until 1926 and this film is thought to have been made two years prior. It is more likely that the reference to Miss Australia indicates her status as a supporter of Australian-made goods and therefore a proud Australian.

It was common for the 'Made in Australia’ slogan to appear at the end of the Made in Australia Council’s films, but unusual for a person to hold or appear in front of a sign which carried the slogan on it. The effect here is to reinforce the slogan in people’s minds with the added impact of a beautiful woman to remind viewers of its importance.
