Curator’s notes

The fission bomb codenamed Breakaway, tested at Maralinga at five minutes past midnight on 22 October 1956, was a tower-burst explosion. In other words, it was exploded from a tower. This clip shows the mute footage, shot from two vantage points. Two cameras, a high-speed Vinten HS 300 and a normal-speed Éclair Cameflex, were placed at one site, and a high-speed Vinten HS 300 was placed at the other.
