Clip description
Two men look at a drawing of a housing estate plan, a model of low-rise flats and a miniature of a freestanding house which can be easily extended as the family grow. Inside a factory at Homesglen, Victoria, workers construct concrete walls that are then transported by truck to the building site where the houses are assembled. At another construction site, timber houses are being assembled in an 'open air factory’ before being transported in two halves by truck to their suburban location where they will be set on their foundations.
Curator’s notes
The housing estate plans shown in this clip pre-empt the suburban sprawl and rise in private estates which have drastically changed the urban landscape since the 1940s.
