‘Society won't look after us’

This clip chosen to be PG

Clip description

Voices from resident protests against St Kilda’s street prostitution are juxtaposed with images of sex workers on the neighbourhood’s streets. Gillian, sporting a black eye, talks about an encounter with a bad client.

Curator’s notes

This clip contrasts street prostitution as an abstract social issue and as a human experience. Elsewhere in the film, we see Gillian standing at the side of the road watching anti-prostitution protests pass by. These moments suggest a detachment from discussions that fundamentally involve her. Her outsider status is further underlined by the interview to camera about an incident of violence. She feels she has no voice or recourse to the law which leaves her feeling powerless and unsafe.

Luna Park is an iconic feature of St Kilda’s scenery and here the sights and sounds of the carnival take on a dark quality.
