Clip description

A boy (Joel Edgerton) speculates on his father’s stories, silences and past as a Lithuanian refugee.

Curator’s notes

Father’s voice-over is quite understated. Director and animator Sebastian Danta uses visual metaphor to suggest details it leaves out, such as the impact of his father’s drinking on the family.

Danta uses fluid scene transitions to move back and forward in time as he considers his father’s past. He communicates Lithuania’s turbulent history through the raising and lowering of a flag; and the experience of being a refugee in different places via a flowing succession of views from windows. The score by Jonathan Nix and Miles Nicholas adds extra drama and emotion.
