Series synopsis:
A magazine program in which Margaret Pomeranz and David Stratton review the latest film releases including features and documentaries. They conclude each review with their a rating out of five stars.
Curator’s Notes:
Margaret Pomeranz and David Stratton have worked together for over twenty years (1986-2007) to create a 'must watch’ program for those who like to keep abreast of the latest film releases. They often interview either the director or one of the stars of the film following the review so that we can glean a little more information about how the film came about and the film production process. Though the program began on SBS, the duo moved to the ABC in mid 2004 where, although the name changed from The Movie Show to At The Movies, their inimitable style remains the same. They even work with the same series producer Brendan Walls.
It’s a program that’s very dependant on distribution companies offering a show reel of each film that’s released, free of copyright restrictions, for the purpose of reviewing the film. When either Margaret or David present their review, they script their words around clips of that footage in order to enhance and explain what they mean. They’re both highly skilled at telling us just enough about the movie to excite our curiosity, without giving away the plot line.
They began their partnership with SBS in 1986. Margaret had been one of the very first writer-producers of the broadcaster when it began in 1980. David had been a director of the Sydney Film Festival and a film reviewer for the international magazine Variety. These days they are the doyens of television film reviewing and well known throughout Australia and the world. They often send back reports from Cannes or Venice and indeed David has been a former president of the International Critics Jury for both the Cannes and Venice Film Festivals.
