School opening and garden party

This clip chosen to be G

Clip description

This clip begins with a tree planting ceremony at the Pakington Street Infants School in Kew, Victoria. The next scene shows a a garden party given by the Mayor and Mayoress of Kew in honour of the Governor of Victoria, Lord Carmichael, seen here in attendance with his wife. The camera pans across the garden scene and shows the guests and a rotunda.

Curator’s notes

This garden party took place on 8 December 1910 in Melbourne after the opening of the Pakington Street Infants School by the State Governor Sir Thomas Carmichael. To mark the occasion, an oak tree brought over from the Kew Gardens in England was planted during the ceremony. The oak still stands in the school.
