Clip description
This clip shows highlights from the annual challenge road race for the Professor Anderson Stuart Cup. Competitors run from Double Bay to Rose Bay in Sydney’s harbour suburbs. They are shown at the start of the race, and then later when they have completed their circuit and are nearing the finish line. Large crowds watch on foot, horse and in buggies. The clip ends with a shot of the trophy.
Curator’s notes
The beginning and end of the race is covered from almost the same vantage point. In the early days of cinema, camera equipment was far heavier and more difficult to move around, thus limiting a cinematographer’s ability to cover a live event from a number of angles. As technology developed, equipment became more mobile and coverage of events more comprehensive. It is interesting to view this clip in comparison to athletics coverage today where cameras are positioned on mobile tracks and follow the competitors as they run. Portable video technology also allows the camera to get closer to the action and film sports events from the competitor’s point of view.
