The Kinema News Reel (1932)

Synopsis

This silent black-and-white newsreel footage captures the arrival of the eighteenth touring English cricket team in Perth in 1932 and part of a match against Western Australia at the WACA ground.

Curator’s notes

Produced by the Kinema Service for the Hotel Australia, this newsreel shows glimpses of the English cricket team that went on to play the famous 'Bodyline’ series against Australia later in the season. This newsreel would have been filmed around October 1932 when the Englishmen played a three-day match against Western Australia, not long after their arrival in Perth. It includes footage of the team arriving in Perth; players practicing in the nets; and footage of the notorious English captain Douglas Jardine and the two English opening batsmen – Herbert Sutcliffe and Maurice Leyland.

The 1980s Kennedy Miller mini-series Bodyline captured the drama and tension of the controversial 1932-33 series in Australia. While there is not a lot of ‘action’ here in this real-life footage, it does show some of the players involved in the now-famous season of cricket in Australia.
