Clip description

This black-and-white Australasian Gazette newsreel shows highlights of the 1932–1933 England versus Australia cricket series. It starts with footage of the packed stadium, and then to the Australian cricket team walking out onto the field. It includes clips of the first Test in Sydney.

Curator’s notes

The newsreel begins with a title card which states that the clip shows highlights of the first Test of the 1932–1933 cricket series. This is the cricket series that has been coined the 'Bodyline’ series.

Australasian Gazette newsreels, like today’s news, usually included a variety of clips including a few national or political stories, something of local interest, entertainment and sport like this newsreel.

As it is silent and there are no intertitles, it is difficult to know who is batting and fielding unless you know the cricketers before viewing the item. For this reason, it seems a little disjointed but accompanied by live music or commentary, this item would have been entertaining.
