Clip description

This Australasian Gazette newsreel from 1926 shows Australian diving champion Clive Barass and his troupe diving from a tower at the Clifton Gardens Baths near Mosman, Sydney. Clive Barass dives followed by Arthur O’Connor, a young diver, who performs a forward somersault dive followed by another that begins with a handstand. The troupe then performs a group dive from the diving tower, displaying their skill and precision.

Curator’s notes

This entertaining Australasian Gazette newsreel from 1926, shows us the diving feats of Australian diving champion Clive Barass and his troupe.

As this is a silent newsreel, an intertitle is used to introduce Arthur O’Connor, however there are no other intertitles used and this makes this newsreel a little disjointed.

As the diving troupe dives from a diving tower, it is captured by a wide shot followed by a shot that is taken from above, from the tower itself. This gives the viewer a diver’s-view and a perspective they are unlikely to have the opportunity of seeing.
