Curator’s notes
Ernest Gourlay Morris was an amateur cinematographer of varying skill who produced work from the 1940s to 60s. While most of his known work may be classed as home movies, his better work could pass as that of a professional of that era. His production Beautiful Berri, though silent and an amateur film, may have passed as a promotional production for the Berri area.
This home movie is interesting because it shows two contrasting glimpses into the role of women during and after the Second World War in the clips of the Queen of the Murray beauty contest and the Women’s Land Army.
Because this home movie is filmed on Kodachrome, Ernst Morris has left us with some valuable colour images of life of that era.
Being a home movie, this film is a compilation of unrelated and diverse subjects.
