Clip description

This clip from a home movie filmed by Australia’s Prime Minister, Sir Robert Menzies, begins with Mrs Clementine Churchill in curlers waving out a window to the camera. It then shows Sarah Churchill in the garden, Mrs Randolph Churchill getting into a car and a close-up of Winston Churchill smoking a cigar. An intertitle tells us that ‘The Duke and Duchess of Kent visit the Prime Minister’ and the footage includes them inspecting troops on the grounds. Footage of Sir Robert standing with Winston Churchill is preceded by an intertitle that states ‘Just to prove that I met him.’

Curator’s notes

This clip shows rare footage of the Churchills. The footage is also unusual for being colour 16mm, rarely used outside the professional arena as it was extremely expensive.

Sir Robert’s humour and excitement to see Churchill is revealed in this clip. He states that this footage is ‘Just to prove that I met him.’
