Freedom to the city – Edinburgh

Original classification rating: not rated. This clip chosen to be PG

Clip description

This clip from a home movie filmed by Australian Prime Minister, Sir Robert Menzies, begins with a title card that states ‘Presented by the Corporation of Edinburgh along with the Burgess Ticket conferring the Freedom of the City to Rt. Hon. Robert Gordon Menzies, P.C., K.C., L.L.M 18th March 1948 Rt. Hon. Andrew Murray, O.B.E., Lord Provost.’ It is followed by a close-up of a gold box with the Edinburgh coat of arms that is opened by a woman to reveal the silk lining inside. The woman then unfolds Sir Robert Menzies’ certificate.

Curator’s notes

This clip records the certificate Sir Robert received for the Freedom to the City in Edinburgh.

The Freedom to the City in Edinburgh has been bestowed on various people for over 500 years. Other recipients of the honour include Alexander Graham Bell and Ben Johnson, a close friend of Shakespeare.
