McIlwraith, Peter: Brisbane Show and Moonbi Park (c.1950)

Synopsis

This silent colour home movie, filmed by Peter McIlwraith, is of the annual Brisbane Exhibition (or 'Ekka’) in the 1950s. It features the showgrounds, crowds and rides, as well as footage of Moonbi Park and a family wedding party in a garden.

Curator’s notes

The experience of the Brisbane Exhibition (now officially called the Royal Queensland Show) is captured beautifully in this amateur footage. The energy of the crowds and rides at the showground is evident and, although taken over 50 years ago, is a familiar scene to many of us who grew up going to the show as kids.

The dodgem cars and merry-go-round make an appearance, as well as all-but-vanished attractions like the boxing tent, adding to the nostalgic feel of this clip. Home movies typically capture family and social events such as this and are now considered an important contributor to the historical record.
