Clip description

This clip from a colour home movie taken by Alan Bresnahan in 1971 begins with a map showing where Beechworth is located in Victoria. It then shows the main street including the Tanswell’s Commercial Hotel.

Curator’s notes

Beechworth became popular as a gold mining town in the 1850s but by 1896 the main gold rush was over. The town continued to grow despite the lull in gold mining with the development of a prison and hospital. Further smaller businesses such as the Tanswell’s Commercial Hotel developed to service this growing community.
