Dimpel, Konrad: On the Voyage to Germany (c.1966)

Synopsis

In 1966, Konrad Dimpel and his young family left Fremantle port for Germany on the passenger ship Achille Lauro. Dimpel filmed this silent home movie of the voyage from Australia to Germany, along the way capturing the on board activities of its guests and stop-overs in Singapore and Cairo.

Curator’s notes

Konrad Dimpel emigrated from Germany to Australia in 1954. Dimpel has recorded his family’s history since his arrival in Australia through home movies and continues to do so. This home movie was shot on 8mm colour film and was deposited with the National Film and Sound Archive along with around 40 other home movies which Dimpel has filmed over the years. His home movie collection is of interest for its detail of domestic interiors, public sites of recreation, family history, and as a record of Australian life.

The Achille Lauro sailed from 1939 to 1994, and from the late 1960s made regular voyages between Europe and Australia. The voyage captured in this home movie would have been one of the first departing Fremantle for Europe. A further note of interest: The Achille Lauro is perhaps most well known for being hijacked by the PLF (Palestinian Liberation Front) in 1985 during which American Leo Klinghoffer was killed.
