Whitlam – Visit to Bendigo and Eaglehawk (1973)

Synopsis

In Bendigo, assisting with the Labor Party’s campaign for the May 1973 Victorian state elections, Gough Whitlam opens the 2nd Eaglehawk Dahlia and Arts Festival and addresses a crowd in the Bendigo Trades Hall.

Curator’s notes

Only a few months after becoming the first Labor Prime Minister in 23 years, Gough Whitlam was in Victoria lending support to the party’s campaign for the May 1973 state elections. This current affairs 'special presentation’ by the then BCV-TV (now BCV 8) covers his visit to Bendigo and Eaglehawk. In Bendigo he addressed a crowd in the historic Trades Hall and in Eaglehawk he opened the '2nd Eaglehawk Dahlia and Arts Festival’. Eaglehawk, which in 1994 was united with several municipalities to form the City of Greater Bendigo, was a separate borough at the time.
