Voice of a Nation (c.1918)

Synopsis

This silent actuality footage from around 1918 captures returned Australian soldiers marching through a city street. It features soldiers on foot and horseback and scenes of horse-drawn Red Cross ambulances.

Curator’s notes

Voice of a Nation appears to be a fragment of actuality footage filmed around the end of the First World War. Because there are no titles or production information on the film itself, the stock date is used to provide an estimated date of production (circa 1918). The horse-drawn Red Cross wagons also hint as to the date it was filmed. The street corner is most likely an intersecting street in Sydney, although it may also be Melbourne. The filmmaker remains unknown.
