Cockatoo Island: HMAS Success Launching (1984)

Synopsis

HMAS Success is launched from Cockatoo Island in Sydney Harbour, on 3 March 1984.

Curator’s notes

In 1947, the giant UK Vickers Group purchased Cockatoo Docks and Engineering Company, which at that time held the lease of the Cockatoo Island dockyard in Sydney Harbour from its owner, the Commonwealth. Twenty-five years later, in 1972, the Commonwealth negotiated a new trading agreement and lease to run for 21 years up until 31 December 1992. The lessee company’s name was changed to Vickers Cockatoo Dockyard Pty Ltd. The HMAS Success, an Auxiliary Oiler Replenishment (AOR) vessel, was the last ship to be built on Cockatoo Island before the dockyard closed in 1992.
