Clip description

Mick Taylor (John Jarratt) has rescued the stranded travellers, after their car has broken down at a meteorite crater. He tows them back to his desert camp, promising to fix their car. They talk about his life as a shooter on the huge outback stations. Mick jokes with them about shooting tourists.

Curator’s notes

John Jarratt worked on his performance for some months before shooting began – lowering his voice and working on the character’s laugh, among other things. In this scene, Mick begins to play the mind games he enjoys so much – notably with the stare at Ben, after his comment about freedom. Jarratt holds the stare for an uncomfortably long time, as if deciding whether to attack now or later. The water the three tourists are drinking is drugged, so he seems to decide he has plenty of time left. The crater at Wolf Creek is a real place, although it is spelled Wolfe Creek.
