Clip description

After the body of Kenwood (Anthony Hayes) is found in the culvert, Pete (Khan Chittenden) and his drug connection Steve (Tim McCunn) watch the police at the scene. They find Cheryl (Gillian Alexy), who is far from upset that Kenwood is dead. She and Pete slept together after the bashing. In the rain she tells him she had a good time with him. Pete is worried that she will tell her boyfriend Jerry that they slept together.

Curator’s notes

This is an extraordinary scene, for the way the characters react to the death of Kenwood – or don’t react. Even the hardened criminal, Steve, is shocked by Cheryl’s laughter and Pete is more concerned about his friend Jerry finding out that he has slept with Cheryl. Given that Pete, Cheryl and Steve beat another man to death the previous evening, albeit without meaning to kill him, Cheryl’s statement that ‘I had a good time last night’ takes on a sinister tone. Her wet t-shirt accentuates the rampant sense of sexuality between Pete and Cheryl. They are fatally attracted to each other. Unfortunately, Jerry thinks he loves Cheryl – probably the first time he has felt such an emotion for a girl.
