Clip description

The three brothers have escaped the bookie robbery with the bags of loot, only to wind up back at Flemington Racecourse. Dale (Guy Pearce) asks a tipsy racegoer on her way home if he can buy her car. Pamela (Kate Atkinson) refuses, but she finds the approach of Mal (Damien Richardson) much more appealing. Shane (Joel Edgerton) really is sick, suffering from a bout of food poisoning brought on by his brother’s prison-made blood sausage.

Curator’s notes

The film throws constant surprises at us, usually in the way one or more of the characters behave. Mal and the tipsy Pamela are falling for each other in this scene – love at first sight. The effect is heightened by the way the camera moves in on her as Mal has his fingers in the window, as if something magical is occurring – which it is. Kate Atkinson’s performance in these few minutes is a perfect comic cameo. She reacts with innocence and openness, almost naiveté, to three men who want a lift to Sydney. The lovely joke here is that Mal does too – going weak at the knees, straight after a massive shootout.
