Clip description
The brothers have flown to Melbourne with their lawyer Frank Malone (Robert Taylor). At a house by Port Phillip Bay, Frank outlines the job – they’re going to steal the bookies’s take from the Melbourne Cup. Dale (Guy Pearce) realises that there is another part of the plan when Frank introduces two new associates – Melbourne criminals Paul (Kym Gyngell) and Tarzan (Dorian Nkono).
Curator’s notes
The film makes good use of distinct and interesting locations. An example is the large tree where the taxi pulls up and the dowdy old timber house in which they hear the plan. Close observation gives us the first clue that something is up with Tarzan’s perceptions – the number of the house is reversed when he looks at it. The scene also demonstrates a good use of sound – the creaky floors and doors of the house, the sound of windy Melbourne (even though this is supposed to be November). The subtitles at the end of the scene are used throughout when the boys break into ‘pig’ Latin – their way of communicating in private in prison.
