Clip description
The brothers enjoy a breakfast at Bondi after being released from prison. Mal (Damien Richardson) and Dale (Guy Pearce) enjoy Shane’s (Joel Edgerton) food after he refuses to eat it: the chips are not straight enough. They suit up and swing into action for a perfectly executed robbery on an armoured truck. This is their last job, they believe.
Curator’s notes
This is the tail end of the first scene, after initial shots of the brothers in prison. Their behaviour at the Bondi restaurant tells us a lot about their characters – Mal’s healthy appetite, Shane’s neurosis, and Dale’s seniority. Each one is quickly established as an individual, but it’s also very clear that they are brothers – largely by the way that Mal and Dale respond to Shane’s fussy eating habits. They’ve been eating his food since childhood, and they enjoy winding him up.
The robbery is extremely fast and well executed, both by the brothers and by the director, Scott Roberts. No fuss, no blood, no worries and virtually no dialogue. This is a very good way of getting our attention. Making his debut feature, Scott Roberts is presenting his credentials here, announcing that he knows what he’s doing.
The gum-chewing security guard is played by stuntman Nash Edgerton, brother of Joel, who later directed The Square (2009).
