Curator’s notes
Aside from adding sound to The Cheaters, the Standardtone version also condensed many of the silent version’s individual scenes. Viewers of this clip and clip one of The Cheaters (silent) (1929) will be able to compare the silent’s coverage of the return from the jewellery store with its sound equivalent. Unlike other key sequences from the film, this one has a soundtrack entirely dubbed rather than re-shot, and both its synchronisation and overall impact is more consistent.
