Clip description

Paula Marsh (Isabel McDonagh billed as 'Marie Lorraine’) expresses contrition to her father Bill Marsh (Arthur Greenaway) after stealing from a jewellery store. ‘Lady Worth’ (Leal Douglas) tells Paula about valuable pearls owned by a Mrs Hugh Nash. Bill Marsh and gang member Jules Severie (Stanley Court) begin to plan their next robbery.

Curator’s notes

Aside from adding sound to The Cheaters, the Standardtone version also condensed many of the silent version’s individual scenes. Viewers of this clip and clip one of The Cheaters (silent) (1929) will be able to compare the silent’s coverage of the return from the jewellery store with its sound equivalent. Unlike other key sequences from the film, this one has a soundtrack entirely dubbed rather than re-shot, and both its synchronisation and overall impact is more consistent.

The New Zealand-born Reg Quartly, who plays the teenage boy Jan, had a long career as a stage and television comedian. For the first generation of Australian TV audiences, he was best known as compere and lead comic in the ATN-7 children’s program The Town of Make Believe.
