Clip description

Katrina (Emily Barclay) flies into a rage after an argument with Rusty (Michael Dorman), her boyfriend. When she finds her car blocked in, she dumps her baby and takes the keys to his most prized possession, a Valiant Charger. At the beauty salon, she threatens Lilya (Mia Wasikowska), the young beautician, with death. She blames Lilya for a warning she has received from the child welfare authorities.

Curator’s notes

The film walks a difficult line between comedy and completely confronting drama, keeping the audience off balance by its unpredictability. Katrina in full rage is a scary sight and Emily Barclay’s performance has an explosive power – part petulant child who always gets what she wants, and part full-on psychopathic adult who thinks nothing of making death threats. Lilya has been useful to her as a child-minder; when Katrina thinks that Lilya has betrayed her ‘trust’, her revenge is to get the intellectually disabled Kenny to kill Lilya’s dog. Like Lady Macbeth, Katrina is an expert manipulator of men, but she rarely gets blood on her own hands.
