Clip description

Niaz (Niaz Khan Shinwari) looks on as locals discuss seeing a movie set in nearby Afghanistan in which the heroes were the mujahideen. It turns out to have been Rambo III (1988).

Curator’s notes

This succinct jab at zigzagging US foreign policy in the region makes its point with humour (the US supported the fundamentalist Islamic militants, the mujahideen, when they fought against the Russian occupation but later regarded them as the enemy for supporting al-Qaeda). The brief discussion of a movie echoes cousin Anousha’s earlier explanation of cinema (like TV but bigger) in the letter to Niaz in clip one. This excerpt follows a dialogue about a local arms dealer who smokes like Clint Eastwood.
